Bringing your own eSIM router
AirWave does not rent you a router and does not sell you one. You bring hardware you already own, or buy hardware you like, and we supply the data. That is the whole model — and it means the router you pick is the single decision that determines whether your experience is good.
The one hard requirement: eSIM, not a hotspot
This is where most people go wrong, so it is worth being blunt. A portable Wi-Fi hotspot is not a 5G router. Hotspots expose Wi-Fi and a USB tether point for phones and tablets. They are built around phone use, and many are carrier-locked to the SIM tray they shipped with.
What you want is a 5G CPE router — a small box with external MIMO antennas, an eSIM slot, and an Ethernet port. That is the category that replaces a cable modem.
What to check before you buy
- It must support eSIM. Not dual-SIM with a physical tray, not “SIM + eSIM optional”. It has to have an eSIM slot you can write a QR profile to.
- Check the bands. In NEPA you want LTE Band 4, 12, 71 and 66, plus 5G n41, n71 and n77. A router sold for a different region can be physically perfect and still fall back to slow 5G because the bands it supports are not the ones the towers here use.
- External antennas, or at least a case for them. MIMO is the reason 5G is fast. A router with two fixed internal antennas in a plastic box is leaving most of the speed on the table. Put it near a window before you conclude the coverage is bad.
- Unlocked, with a usable APN mode. Some units ship firmware-locked to a carrier and cannot be pointed at another network. Check that the manual describes changing the APN.
- Wi-Fi 6 if you can get it. The cellular side will often outpace a cheap router's Wi-Fi, and then the router is the bottleneck.
What activation actually involves
There is no SIM to mail and no store visit. You sign in, we provision the data profile against your account, and you receive an activation QR code. In the router's web interface you open the eSIM profile installer, scan or paste the code, and the profile installs. From there the router connects to the network and you are live.
Because the profile is written to the eSIM itself, moving that data profile to a different router later is a re-provisioning job rather than a hardware swap.
Mistakes that cost people a weekend
- Buying a hotspot. By far the most common. It will not accept the profile.
- Storing the router in a closet. Concrete, foil-backed insulation and a metal rack are brutal on 5G. One window, reasonably high, is usually the whole fix.
- Judging speed on a single test. Cellular throughput swings with time of day and load. Look at latency and at whether it holds up in the evening.
- Placing it next to the router you are replacing. Old and new units close together will interfere. Unplug the old one once the new one is stable.
- Forgetting the Wi-Fi password migration. Not AirWave's problem, but it is the most common support call we see in the first hour.
Still deciding?
If the reason you are hesitating is the monthly number, how much data you actually need is the more useful page to read first. Hardware you already own plus a light usage profile is where this service fits best.
